September 1st is here, and the Giants can now add any player from their 40-Man roster to the active major league roster. But only one minor league regular got the call-up: Double-A center fielder Darren Ford, who impressed in Spring Training but has struggled in pitching-friendly Richmond. The Giants did also bring back the rehabbing Edgar Renteria and Dan Runzler.

The Giants didn’t feel pressured to call up many players due to the late additions of Jose Guillen and Cody Ross giving the team an already-robust roster of options. However, other players may make an appearance next week as minor league seasons wind down. The Fresno Grizzlies, who are in a playoff chase in name only after a six-game losing streak, still have use for some of the 40-man roster players they have, such as Eugenio Velez and Manny Burriss.

For one team, the season is over. The AZL Giants finished their season with a one-game playoff loss to the Reds, as the season winds down across the system. Fresno faltered in a big series in Sacramento, but Brandon Belt has woken up. Brock Bond has gotten back on track in Richmond, and Augusta's Chris Dominguez had a big four-hit game this weekend as well. It's Just Another Weekend In The Minors!

The Arizona Fall League announced the initial rosters for the 2011 season, and the Giants have three hitting prospects heading to Arizona for the 19th season of the prospect showcase. Top hitting prospect Brandon Belt headlines the Scottsdale Scorpions roster, and will be joined by third baseman Conor Gillaspie and second baseman Charlie Culberson.

After dominating the Arizona Rookie League season, the AZL Giants’ season is done.

Ace Austin Fleet took the loss despite giving up two runs in four innings to the AZL Reds, and a late rally fell short as the Reds won 6-5 to take the one-game first round of the playoffs. The playoffs in the AZL are a single game in each round, meaning that the Giants are eliminated from the playoffs while the Brewers will move on to the AZL finals.

Well, this offseason’s affiliation shuffle just got very, very interesting. Or much less interesting, depending on your perspective.

Over the weekend, the Harrisburg Senators announced that they had extended their affiliation with the Washington Nationals through 2012. This was a surprise because it had been public knowledge that the Richmond Flying Squirrels were courting the nearby Nationals. It made sense; the Nationals were a nearby market, and Richmond is a Triple-A quality market that was a former Orioles territory that the Nationals would want to nail down.

Brandon Belt's dream season got better Wednesday when he was promoted from Double-A Richmond to Fresno.

San Francisco selected Belt in the fifth round of the 2009 Draft. In his first professional season, Belt impressed everyone, first leading the San Jose Giants to a first-half season title with a .383 batting average and 62 RBIs, best on the club.

The Giants and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have finalized the expected, and the team announced a two-year extension to their player development contract. With that, the Volcanoes and Giants will remain affiliated through 2012.

Salem, Oregon’s capital about 50 miles southwest of Portland, has been a baseball market on and off since 1940, and been a key market of the Northwest League since it was formed in 1955. The current team was moved from Bellingham in 1997, and has been a Giants affiliate the entire time. It filled a hole in the market after the Salem Dodgers moved to Yakima in 1990.

The Houston Astros claimed infielder Matt Downs off of waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. The Giants designated Downs for assignment and placed him on waivers to make room for outfielder Cody Ross, who was himself claimed off waivers by the Giants from the Florida Marlins, who let him go.

Downs, 26, hit .244 with the Giants this season in 29 games, with seven doubles and one home run to post a .372 slugging percentage and a .318 on-base percentage. He was hitting .255 this season in the minors, and had just eight home runs on the season, by far his lowest total in a full season of baseball. At the time of his DFA, Downs was playing in the Arizona Rookie League rehabbing an injury.
